The Montgomery Photo Festival 2023

(formerly called "The Society of Arts & Crafts (SAC's)/Stonehenge Gallery Photo Competition")

This program/project has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

—The call has closed. Thanks to all the photographers who submitted work to this show!
—Anna Walker Skillman, owner of Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta, is this year's juror. (See the "Meet the Juror" page for more information on our judge.)
—Acceptance and declination email will be sent to all entrants on or about the end of the day, Tuesday, May 31.

This photography exhibit will open on August 13 and be on display until August 27. The Montgomery exhibit is presented by the Society of Arts & Crafts (SAC’s), a non-profit, 501(c)3 charitable organization committed to the advancement of art education and art appreciation. The informal Montgomery area photo group called the "9" and the staff at the Society of Arts & Crafts (SAC's) are supplying the volunteer labor to make this event happen.

The exhibit will be displayed at the Kress on Dexter building in downtown Montgomery, the former home of the S.H. Kress & Co. "five and dime" department store. The address is 39 Dexter Avenue, Montgomery, 36104. The resurgence of Dexter Avenue in Montgomery has gained steam with the redevelopment of some major structures, among them the historic Kress building. The Montgomery Photo Festival is thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the 2022 exhibit in this space.

When the exhibit in Montgomery closes photographers will have the option to have their work displayed for an additional month in September at the International Art Center at Troy University in Troy, Alabama.

Submission is open to all photographers (professional and amateur), working in all forms of photography. Four categories are offered.

1. Color
2. Black and white
3. Alternative process
4. Manipulation (digital and film)

The cost to enter is $25. You may enter up to three images for that fee. There is no theme for this exhibit. There is no time limit for when you produced your work. Let's elevate photography as fine art. Show us your best!

Images previously displayed in-gallery at any of the previous three Society of Arts & Crafts and Stonehenge Gallery photo competitions are not eligible for this competition and should not be submitted.

Awards:   Best in show — $1,000
Best in category — $500 (four awards, one for each category)
Merit award — $250 (four awards, one for each category)
Grand total — $4,000 in cash awards!

Shipping and hand delivery instructions will be provided to accepted entrants with the acceptance notice.

The exhibit runs August 13-27, 2022, with an opening reception at the Kress on Dexter building on Saturday, August 13, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The exhibit will be open for in-person viewing Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 4 p.m, and by appointment by writing to montgomeryphotofestival@gmail.com

We are honored to have Anna Walker Skillman, owner of Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia, as the juror for this exhibit. See the "Meet the Juror" page for more information on our judge. Ms. Skillman will also give a juror's talk on Sunday morning, August 14, at 10:30 a.m at the Georgine Clark Alabama Artists Gallery in the RSA Tower, 201 Monroe Street (ground floor) just several blocks from the exhibit site. Note that on Sunday you will enter the Clark gallery via the South McDonough Street entrance around the corner from the main entrance on Monroe Street.

When the exhibit at the Kress on Dexter gallery closes, photographers may opt in for a second exhibit of their work at the International Arts Center, the Huo Bao Zhu Gallery, at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. The opportunity to opt in for this exhibit is available during the entry procedure. The Montgomery Photo Festival organizers will arrange to get photographs to Troy and return them to photographers after the show in Troy closes. (See "Troy Exhibit" page for more information.)

If your photo is selected for the exhibit, you may ship it, matted and framed as directed in the "Submissions guidelines" dropdown menu. Shipping and hand delivery instructions will be provided to the accepted entrants with the acceptance notice. Additionally, matting and framing are available from the Stonehenge frame shop. Contact them directly via the information/website link listed under the "Stonehenge Gallery" dropdown menu. The Montgomery Photo Festival will coordinate with Stonehenge framing to get your photo(s) delivered to the exhibit. Note: There is an earlier deadline for shipping images to be framed by Stonehenge. See the "Calendar" tab at the top of this home page and in the sidebar for date details. Also note that there are other framing options in Montgomery, but the Montgomery Photo Festival will not coordinate getting that work framed and delivered to the exhibit.
